What Grinds Our Gears: These jerky bus rides are making me lose my mind — and my lunch

Opinions February 29, 2020

By: Meera Eragoda, Staff Writer My ongoing experience of being on buses has featured drivers braking every two goddamn seconds for my twice-a-day hour-and-a-half commutes. I don’t know anymore if this is my life or if I’ve died and I’m in my own personal hell. If I’m standing, I’m being flung into the laps of strangers — and neither of us want me in their personal space. If I’m sitting, I’m either sliding practically off my seat, or the jerkiness of the brakes is literally making me nauseous. And no, I am NOT exaggerating this point.  It’s gotten so bad that…

Opinions February 15, 2020

By: Lubaba Mahmud, Staff Writer It’s 10 p.m. on a weekend, and I’ve snuggled up in bed with all sorts of snacks to rewatch Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Ahh, cozy, right? WRONG. Because DING DING DING there goes the obnoxious, unplanned fire alarm…

What Grinds Our Gears: UBC students are spoiled for bus choice while SFU only gets four routes

Opinions January 18, 2020

By: Meera Eragoda, Staff Writer It seems from most places in Vancouver it’s possible to catch a direct bus to UBC. The same cannot be said about SFU, and that must be because all of TransLink’s executives graduated from UBC. How…

What Grinds Our Gears: Students who don’t understand the etiquette of a shared laundry room

Opinions November 3, 2019

By: Paige Riding, News Writer The shared laundry rooms in the Towers are graveyards for long-lost left socks and the hometown of bacteria colonies. The white-washed walls below fluorescent hospital ward lighting are unavoidable for those practicing basic hygiene — so…

What Grinds Our Gears: Why does flavour innovation stop at the pumpkin patch?

Opinions October 26, 2019

By: Gabrielle McLaren, Editor-in-Chief Before Starbucks takes me in the dead of night and disposes of my body with such corporate efficiency that it’s never found, hear me out. I get it, pumpkin spice is delicious. I hear you: I had…

Opinions October 13, 2019

By: Nicole Magas, Opinions Editor Dear Typhoid Mary, You know who you are. You’re the one who comes into class with a red nose and black-rimmed eyes, sits down, and immediately starts producing the deepest, wettest series of coughs that would…
