As its name suggests, the virus is primarily found in birds, but it’s also been found in at least 26 mammals since its classification in 1996. Humans have also contracted the H5N1 avian flu, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting 889 human cases between 2003 and 2024 — 463 of those cases being fatal.
