Everyone deserves HPV vaccinations free of charge

EIC November 7, 2016

Are you a male who’s sexually active, straight, HIV negative, and not “street involved”? If you are, tough luck, because you aren’t eligible to receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for free. Under the current BC policy, you can get its cost covered if you are a female aged 12 to 22, or if you are a nine- to 26-year-old male at “increased risk” of HPV — for instance, if you “have sex with men [. . .] are street involved, [or] are HIV positive.” If you don’t fall into those categories though, you’re going to have to pay $300–450…

Vincent Van Gogh-and-paint!

Peak Web November 3, 2016

Hey there, friends. I’m an artist — and you should be one, too. Now, you may be thinking, “No way, I hate making visual art. Everything I illustrate looks like an uncharismatic potato.” Where’s the issue in that, though? Where…

Mulan can save China on her own

EIC November 1, 2016

At 20 years old, I finally watched Mulan for the first time. I was instantly enamoured with this strong heroine who aimed to bring honour to her family by doing the unthinkable: posing as a boy to go fight in…

Privilege quizzes come from a place of privilege

EIC November 1, 2016

Privilege is a funny thing to quantify. Those who hold it generally can’t see it, which is what makes it problematic. Privileged people are oblivious to the special treatment they receive — be it on the basis of race, gender,…

Let’s stop the angry black woman narrative

EIC November 1, 2016

Don’t restrict me to “scary” Halloween costumes

EIC October 24, 2016

Like many other holidays, Halloween has evolved from what it once was, barely holding onto its past roots. Once the night for everyone to dress up in their most monstrous attire, evolving gradually from its beginnings as a Celtic festival,…

Halloween is not an excuse to be a jackass

EIC October 24, 2016

"Since 1983, at Spirit Halloween, we have offered a wide and balanced range of Halloween costumes that are inspired by, celebrate, and appreciate numerous cultures.” This is the pithy excuse of a costume supplier defending its shittiest creations, including indigenous…

Costumes can express important social messages

EIC October 24, 2016

This year has been a delight for political junkies (which seems to be everyone, nowadays) and late-night comedians. Our southern neighbours have done an outstanding job for more than a year now, providing us quotidian comic relief as we witness,…

Take your participation marks and stuff them

EIC October 19, 2016

I hate participation marks. There, I said it. I hate them, and they don’t just waste my time; they waste everyone else’s, too. They’re quite possibly the most pointless marks you can get in a class. Yet as I’ve progressed…

Don’t feed the killer clowns with your attention

Peak Web October 19, 2016

There’s no shortage of historical examples of people behaving irrationally and cruelly — shall we say, monstrously — when they feel that behaviour will get them attention. In fact, monsters are precisely what are spawning at playgrounds across the world…
