Philanthropy isn’t the golden ideal we might picture it to be

Opinions April 7, 2022

By: Craig Allan, Peak Associate; Jacob Mattie, Opinions Editor SFU’s business school goes by the name Beedie School of Business. It would be reasonable to assume Beedie is the name of a faculty member; similar to how the Maggie Benston Centre and Robert C. Brown Hall are named after former faculty of SFU. However, the school is named after Ryan and Keith Beedie, two former students. The reason their names adorn the program is because they gave a $22 million dollar “gift” — the largest in the school’s history. It came attached with the request that the school of business…

A photo of the outside of SFU Surrey campus’ entryway atrium. The image looks slightly stretched out, but is otherwise pretty recognizable. The photo was taken at dusk, accenting the building’s lighting.

We need to move on from the suburban myth

Peak Web March 25, 2022

By: Jared Murphy, SFU Student The idea of suburbia probably conjures up many different ideas for you. Possibly, a nostalgic picture of riding your bike until “the street lights turn on,” like mom used to say. For others, maybe feelings of…

WGOG: The need to imitate meat in vegetarian food

Peak Web March 24, 2022

By: Tamanna T., Staff Writer It is ridiculous for vegetarian food to imitate meat. For the first 19 years of my life, I followed a strictly vegetarian diet, with a protein intake coming from curries, stews, stir fries, and dried fruits.…

Brighter side: Coins, fountains, and wishes

Peak Web March 19, 2022

By: Jacob Mattie, Opinions Editor Throwing coins into fountains, to the best of my knowledge, has no wish-granting powers. Trust me; I’ve thrown many coins into many fountains and I’ve yet to notice any tendency for these wishes to come true.…

A body of water near a city. In front of an orange sky, a pillar of smoke rises from a smokestack, looking identical to the clouds overhead. People stand in small boats, fishing. The surface of the water looks speckled and dirty.

We need to start talking more about ocean acidification

Peak Web March 18, 2022

By: Luke Faulks, Staff Writer Oceans are one of the planet’s largest carbon repositories, after forests. Largely thanks to phytoplankton, oceans absorb roughly a quarter of CO2 emissions every year. However, excess emissions caused by the burning of fossil fuels are…

A beautiful bird. It looks to be the size of a large mango, and shares many of the same colours. Its belly is a golden yellow, and its wings and head are coloured charcoal, intricately pattered with its warm colours. It has orange stripes across its wings, head, and throat. Overall, it is stunning.
