I am convinced that in another life, Dua Lipa was an English major. Her podcast Service95 Book Club makes me believe she would’ve aced a seminar on literature and culture. Every month, she chooses a book she’s read and interviews the author. The Service95’s website features additional content, including a list of the author’s book recommendations.
Inclusivity exists at the heart of her podcast. From Ocean Vuong to Roxane Gay, Service95 uplifts voices from a multiplicity of backgrounds. This month, I got to learn more about the novel Martyr!. Written by Kaveh Akbar, Martyr! follows a recently sober, grieving Iranian American poet with suicidal ideation captivated by the concept of martyrdom. Despite the complex, heavy topics frequently covered, Service95 always gives me a sense of connection.
I actually love the podcast so much I tried getting into her music too — unsuccessfully. Don’t get me wrong, I still think she’s a talented queen in every single thing she does. I might not be an avid listener of Dua Lipa’s songs, but of her podcast? Certainly.
